Project scope
The bridges are located in various districts in Western Uganda (Kasese, Kanungu, Kabale, Buhweju and Kabwohe). The overall objective of this project is to replace the bridges which are functionally and structurally obsolete. This bridge replacement intervention is required to be undertaken in 36 months inclusive of an 8 months’ design period with a view to deliver permanent (120-year design life) full load capacity bridge structures while employing innovation.
The project was a design and build by Sinohydro Corporation Ltd as the Contractor and the Consultant, Gauff, carried out the designs and ensured quality for both Sinohydro Corporation Ltd and UNRA, the Client.
- Geotechnical and materials investigations
- Topographical surveys
- Geometric design of the bridges, roads
- Traffic studies
- Pavement design of all approach roads (2Km for each bridge). Approach roads were designed to 1Km gravel and 1Km double bituminous surface treatment
- Hydrological & hydraulic survey and design to accommodate floods and ensure provision of adequate drainage;
- River training and protection works to a minimum of 100m upstream and 100m downstream of the bridge site where required
- Design of river training and protection works where required
- Traffic studies and modelling for pavement design
- Structural design of pedestrian crossings, vehicular overpasses, drainage structures
- Preparation of detailed design drawings and technical specifications
