Project description
Project scope

Kampala drainage is mainly through 8 primary channels served by numerous secondary and tertiary systems. Human settlement and industrial development are extending from the many hills to the lower lying areas on the banks of the drainage channels which are part of wetlands and floodplains.

The natural and manmade drainage channels along the floodplains and low-lying areas are regularly overtopped by floodwaters, causing damage to people’s homes and industrial properties, seriously disrupting traffic flow and economic activity in the city and increasing water pollution.

The frequency of flooding has increased due to increased runoff caused by land-use changes in the catchments and reduction of the buffer capacity of wetlands due to encroachment.

All this results in loss of lives, destruction of livelihoods, and recurring costs to Kampala’s socio-economy. Investment in upgrading drainage infrastructure is required to protect people and their property and also spur economic development.

The overall Project Objective of KIIDP is to reduce the frequency of flooding in Lubigi drainage system through channel expansion, realignment and lining to enhance city infrastructure and improve urban mobility.

The specific objectives of this assignment are to carry out design reviews and construction supervision of drainage improvement works on Lubigi Primary and Nakamiro secondary drainage channels.

The drainage systems to be constructed are:

    1. approximately 2580m of Lubigi primary drainage channel (from Ch 3+680 up to Ch 6+260);
    2. approximately 3280m of Nakamiro secondary channel
  1. Comprehensive review of detailed engineering drawings, specifications, design calculations and propose amendments to the Client deemed necessary to affirm soundness of the design. This is through tasks that include;
    • Review existing Topographical survey data and perform additional surveys where necessary
    • Review and update of the Hydrologic analysis and hydraulic design
    • Review and evaluation of Materials investigations, and perform additional investigations where necessary
    • Review existing engineering drawings and Preparation of Engineering drawings incorporating any design changes
    • Confirmation of Utilities that require relocation in the project area
    • Review engineering cost estimates and propose amendments
    • Overall project management, Works supervision and superintendence during the defects liability period
