Project scope
The railway services in the east African region are inefficient and unreliable. At present, more 90% of the freight handled at the sea port of Mombasa is transported by road.
The aim of the project is to optimise transportation within the east African region by implementing a harmonised railway system to the standard Gauge. The Kampala- Kigali railway encompasses two lots.
- Lot 1 is Kampala – Mirama Hills with spurs to Kasese/Mpondwe and Muko with an estimated length of 904 km
- Lot 2 is Mirama Hill- Kigali, with an estimated length of 200km
