The project road starts on Queensway, about 800m to the Kibuye roundabout (approx. altitude 1165 m above MSL), South of Kampala Central Business District (CBD) and traverses westwards between the existing Kibuye – Busega Road and the Kampala – Kasese Railway Line passing through Ndeeba, Nalukolongo to Natete until it crosses the new alignment of the Kampala – Entebbe Express Road at Busega (approx. altitude 1157 m above MSL), approximately km 7+750 and terminates at km 8+700 where it connects with Section 2.
There are three interchange connections to the road at Kibuye Roundabout, Natete and Busega at the connection with the Kampala – Entebbe Express Road.
The road traverses mostly through flat terrain from Kibuye for the whole length to Busega with more than 60% of the alignment passing through built-up areas. The road is generally following close to secondary watersheds, but is crossing the bigger streams/ wetland of Busega (Mayanja/Nalukongo).
The project involves upgrading the current class 1B paved road to a motorway with restricted entry/exit starting from Kibuye Round about via Busega to Mpigi. The route is part of the Northern Corridor which is the main route to south western part of Uganda and carries a high percentage of international cargo traffic in transit to Eastern Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. The project includes 7 major structures; 2 interchanges at Kibuye and Busega, and 4 overpass bridges at Ndeeba, Kabusu, Mutundwe, Nateete and 1 railway bridge at Kyengera.
